Plow & subsoiler — primary tillage (breaking)
A moldboard (turning) plow is the classic ground-breaker: it slices, lifts, and flips a slab of soil completely over, burying sod and exposing fresh dirt underneath. A subsoiler (ground ripper) doesn't turn soil at all — it drives one or more narrow shanks 10–16+ inches deep to fracture compacted layers and hardpan without bringing subsoil up. A middlebuster or bottom plow splits a single deep furrow, popular for small plots and potato rows. These are the heavy-hitters: they go deepest and pull the hardest, but leave the ground rough and cloddy — not ready to plant.
Disc harrow — cut & mix (secondary tillage)
A disc harrow is a set of angled, concave steel blades (notched discs cut aggressively; smooth discs finish cleaner) that slice into the top few inches, chop sod and residue, and mix it into the soil. Run at an angle, the discs also break down the clods a plow leaves and start leveling the surface. A disc won't dig as deep as a plow or pulverize as fine as a tiller, but it covers acreage fast and is the workhorse of food-plot and small-field prep — many owners use one for the whole job on ground that's already fairly loose.
Rotary tiller — fine seedbed (secondary tillage)
A rotary tiller is PTO-driven: powered L-shaped tines spin and chop the soil into a fine, uniform, level seedbed in a single pass. On virgin sod or hard-packed ground, the tool that fails most often is the one people reach for first: the tiller. Powered tines hate thick sod, roots, and rock, and they'll bounce, wrap, or stall. The proven order of operations from experienced growers:
- 1. Kill the vegetation first. Spray or mow the sod a couple of weeks ahead. Dead grass tills, discs, and plows far easier than living turf, and won't re-root in your fresh seedbed.
- 2. Break it (primary tillage). Run a plow, subsoiler, or middlebuster to fracture and loosen deep. If the ground is truly hard or you suspect a plow-pan, the subsoiler goes first.
- 3. Cut & mix (disc harrow). Disc the broken ground — usually two passes at different angles — to chop sod, mix in residue, and knock the big clods down.
- 4. Finish (tiller or a final light disc). Make a finishing pass for a level, fine seedbed. A rotary tiller shines here on smaller plots.
One rule the old-timers repeat: don't overwork it. Once or twice over the ground is plenty — every extra pass compacts the layer below your tillage depth and beats structure out of the soil. If you can, break ground in the fall and let winter's freeze-thaw cycles mellow the clods for you; it does work no tool can match.
Do you have a hardpan? When you need a subsoiler
If water pools on your plot, roots grow sideways instead of down, or your tiller and disc hit a "floor" a few inches down, you're likely fighting compaction or a hardpan — a dense layer from years of foot traffic, livestock, or shallow tillage. No disc or tiller will fix it, because they only work the top few inches. That's a job for a subsoiler.
A subsoiler pulls narrow shanks deep below the compacted layer and fractures it, restoring drainage and letting roots dive for moisture and nutrients. It's high-draft work — figure roughly 20–30+ HP per shank in typical soil, and pull it when the ground is on the drier side so it shatters rather than smears. Run it before you plow or disc. It's one of the highest-value passes you can make on tired, compacted ground.
How much horsepower do you really need?
Ground-engaging tools are about draft (pulling force) and traction, not just PTO horsepower — the deeper and harder you go, the more you need. A few rules of thumb from our lineup and standard sizing practice:
- Disc harrow: roughly 5–8 HP per foot of width. A 60-inch notched disc suits many 25–45 HP compact and utility tractors. Weight matters as much as HP — a heavier disc penetrates hard ground a light one just skips across.
- Rotary tiller: roughly 5 HP per foot. Sub-compact and compact tractors (~18–35 HP) pair well with a matched sub-compact tiller; oversize it and you'll bog the PTO.

The biggest mistake in ground prep isn't the tool — it's working soil at the wrong moisture. Work ground when it's slightly damp, never soaking wet. Tilling or discing wet clay smears it into slick clods that dry like concrete; working it bone-dry just makes dust and burns extra horsepower. Aim for soil that crumbles in your hand rather than forming a mud ball. Rocky ground favors a disc or subsoiler over a tiller, since spinning tines and rocks don't mix.

It depends on the plot. A disc harrow covers larger plots fast, handles residue and rougher ground, and is the more versatile all-around choice — many food-plotters use nothing else. What's the best way to break new ground for a garden?
