Voltage is what shocks the cow; joules are what push that voltage down a long, weedy fence line. When you size a charger (also called an energizer or fencer), you're really sizing joules. The widely used rule of thumb is about one joule of output stored energy per mile of fence — and that's a minimum. Most experienced graziers buy well past it, because a rotational grazing system only grows: every paddock you add hangs more wire off the same energizer, and spring grass loves to touch the bottom strand.
So if you've got 4 miles of fence today, don't buy a 4-joule unit — a 6-joule (or larger) energizer gives you headroom to push through vegetation, wet grass and future paddocks while still keeping the line hot. A good target on a working fence is roughly 3,000–5,000 volts at the far end. Undersizing the charger is the single most common reason a fence "won't stay hot."

- Water travels with the cattle. Cattle won't walk a half-mile back to a single trough without overgrazing the lane. Plan a central water point, a portable trough, or a lane that reaches every paddock.
- Start with a few big paddocks, then subdivide. Temporary polywire lets you add paddocks as you learn your grass. More paddocks means shorter grazing periods and longer rest — the engine of pasture recovery.
