What does a sacrificial anode actually do?

Zinc corrodes more readily than the other metals in your pool system, so it gives up material first. The anode is consumed in place of your heat exchanger, ladders and rails — that is the whole point, and a wasted anode means it is working.

Do I need one on a salt pool?

Salt water conducts better than fresh, which accelerates galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals. An anode is cheap insurance next to a heat exchanger.

Will it fit 1.5 inch plumbing?

Yes. The tee is 2 inch and ships with two 2 in × 1.5 in slip reducer bushings for 1.5 inch rigid or flex PVC. Glue is not included.

Does the copper wire have to be connected?

Yes. The anode only works when it is bonded to the same ground as the metal it is protecting — Solaxx's instructions have you tie the copper wire to the existing pump ground with a split connector.

How often does it need replacing?

It depends on your water chemistry and how much metal it is protecting. Inspect it at least annually and replace the element once it is substantially consumed. We have asked AWG to confirm the replacement element part number before we list it separately.
